Shane McMahon’s winning of the WWE World Cup in Saudi Arabia has not been received well by fans. On WWE’s official YouTube video of McMahon’s World Cup win, the video at one point had more dislikes than likes. There was a lot of complaining about the decision during the show on social media as well. The WWE World Cup finals were set to go down between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler. Prior to the match getting underway, Miz attempted to attack Ziggler before the bell rang.
During the assault, however, Miz’s leg seemed to give out. Initially, many believed this was a legitimate injury. Shane McMahon later announced he’d step in for Miz and would go on to defeat Ziggler in the World Cup final. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio revealed that this was actually the plan WWE creative came up with, and Miz is not injured. McMahon’s World Cup win is supposed to help his upcoming heel turn, which has been teased as of late on WWE TV.
McMahon will apparently be calling himself the “Best In The World” going forward:
“The idea is that Shane is going heel,” Meltzer said. “Miz wasn’t hurt. This was all booked to be exactly what it is – the beginning of a Shane McMahon heel turn. When this tournament was first put together, this was always the finish. It was always going to be the finish that Shane was going to turn heel when this thing ends.”
